0

A Florida middle school teacher has been arrested and slapped with a battery charge after an altercation with a student on Tuesday morning. Jeffrey Paffumi, 47 years old, was seen on video grabbing a 14-year old student, putting him in a “choke hold” and carrying him out of the classroom. The arrest report states that the student called Mr. Paffumi a racial slur, instigating the subsequent actions. Jeffrey Paffumi was removed from the classroom and is currently on leave pending investigation.

Jeffrey Epstein Suicide Attempt Tape Erased in “Technical Errors”

In a shocking discovery, representatives from the Metropolitan Correctional Center state that the video from outside of Jeffrey Epstein’s cell during his first suicide attempt has been deleted. The MCC explains that the video was never properly saved and has been erased from the backup server as far back as August 2019. This was only found out now because Nicholas Tartaglione, a cellmate of Epstein’s, is on trial. His prosecutors requested the video from outside his, and Epstein’s cell, only to learn that the video filed for those dates was of a different floor.

WATCH: House to Vote on War Powers Resolution

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi issued an official statement announcing the upcoming vote on a War Powers Resolution to limit the President’s military action regarding Iran.

Discussion and debate are currently taking place live, right now, and you can watch the live video feed to watch how it all unfolds.

Here is Speaker Pelosi’s statement regarding this resolution in full:

“Last week, the Trump Administration conducted a provocative and disproportionate military airstrike targeting high-level Iranian military officials.  The Administration took this action without consulting Congress.  This action endangered our servicemembers, diplomats and others by risking a serious escalation of tensions with Iran.  Since then, the President has made clear that he does not have a coherent strategy to keep the American people safe, achieve de-escalation with Iran and ensure stability in the region.
“Members of Congress have serious, urgent concerns about the Administration’s decision to engage in hostilities against Iran and about its lack of strategy moving forward.  Our concerns were not addressed by the President’s insufficient War Powers Act notification and by the Administration’s briefing today.
“Today, to honor our duty to keep the American people safe, the House will move forward with a War Powers Resolution to limit the President’s military actions regarding Iran.  This resolution, which will be led by Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, will go to the Rules Committee this evening and will be brought to the Floor tomorrow.
“The House may also soon consider additional legislation on the Floor to keep America safe.  This legislation includes Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s resolution to repeal the 2002 Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) and Congressman Ro Khanna’s legislation to prohibit funding for military action against Iran not authorized by Congress.
“The Administration must work with the Congress to advance an immediate, effective de-escalatory strategy that prevents further violence.  America and the world cannot afford war.”

Commercial Flight from Iran Crashed, No Survivors

0

Hours after Iran launched missiles at United States bases in Iraq, a commercial flight crashed outside Tehran, the capital of Iran. Reportedly, one of the plane’s engines caught fire shortly after take-off and the pilot was unable to regain control. All 187 people on board, both passengers and crew, are assumed dead and authorities at the crash site say there is little to no chance of finding any survivors. Canada suffered the second heaviest loss of life after Iran, with 63 Canadians perishing in the crash. There is no information yet of what caused the malfunction of the plane, and representatives from the airport have said the aircraft was out of contact with them in the final few minutes.

Listen to A Previously Unreleased Version of “The Man Who Sold The World” by David Bowie

Music icon and legend David Bowie would have turned 73 today.

As a way to celebrate Bowie, his record label, Parlophone, is releasing a six-song EP titled Is It Any Wonder?, and features previously unreleased songs or versions of songs.

The first song released from the new EP is a new version of “The Man Who Sold The World”. This version of the song was recorded in New York just before Bowie’s 50th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden in 1997.

Two things immediately stand out between this previously unreleased version and the original recording. This ‘new’ version strips out the main guitar line and instead uses a sitar, not to mention the eccentric mixture of sounds in the background. And it takes a far more somber tone throughout.

Harvey Weinstein Charged with Two New Counts of Sexual Assault

Today began the trial against Harvey Weinstein in New York City, and also marked the start of proceedings in Los Angles. Harvey Weinstein has been charged with two counts of sexual assault in NYC and two more in Los Angeles. The newest charges are those leveled against him today by the L.A. district attorney. The alleged crimes took place within a two-day period in 2013 and include one felony count each of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by use of force, and sexual battery by restraint.

The trial in New York and the new charges filed in Los Angeles follow the 2017 claims of rape against Harvey Weinstein, and helped effectively spark the #MeToo movement. Over 80 women have come forward with claims against him, and a large portion of them are present at the court proceedings in New York.

Iran Launches Missles at US Bases in Iraq

On Wednesday, January 7th, Iran launched over a dozen surface to surface missles at multiple United States bases in Iraq. Department of Defense Secretary Mark Esper stated “We are not looking to start a war with Iran, but we are prepared to finish one,” but also added that Washington’s first priority is to deescalate the situation. The missle strikes follow the U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian general Qasem Soleimani and is believed to be retaliatory.

Top Video Game Releases for January

Historically, January is a pretty barren month for video games. Following the holidays, there might be one big AAA release, but usually, the month of January is reserved for some indie or DLC releases. 2020 is no different.

Let’s take a look at the biggest releases coming in the first month of the new year.

Journey to the Savage Planet

Release Date: January 28th

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One

Journey to the Savage Planet sees you dropped on a remote planet to decide if the place is proper for human habitation. Your employer, Kindred Aerospace, has left you very little equipment and no real plan for survival, so it is up to you to survey the planet and its wide variety of plants and creatures while surviving. Journey to the Savage Planet is a cooperative first-person game with enough lighthearted humor to give it personality to stand out in January.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind DLC

Release Date: January 23rd

Platform: PS4 (On Xbox One February 25th)

After over a decade of waiting for the third main installment in the series, Kingdom Hearts 3 released in 2019. Luckily for fans of the long-running convoluted story, you don’t have to wait that long to figure out what happened after the events of 3. Re:Mind looks to take place following the conclusion of KH3, but might take another look at events during the main game. Playable characters include Sora, Kairi, Riku, and other keyblade wielders during their search for each other. Kingdom Hearts 3 left a lot of questions in its closing minutes. Hopefully, this DLC can help answer those questions going forward.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Release Date: January 17th

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One

One of the most popular animes in the world receives another video game adaptation with Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. The new game follows the classic storyline of Goku and friends and their battles with the many threats to Earth. Where most Dragon Ball games are focused fighting games, Kakarot is an open-world game that will allow you to see the other moments in Goku’s life including his driving test, fishing, training, and more.

Gohan and Vegeta are just a couple of the other playable characters in DBZ: Kakarot and series creator Akira Toriyama has created a brand new member of the Ginyu Force just for the game. If you consider yourself a fan of the long-running series, you will want to take a look at this game.

Arenado’s Greatness Aside, Is He Worth the Prospects + Contract?

0

Arguably the best all-around third baseman in baseball, the availability of the Colorado Rockies’ Nolan Arenado is the best option for teams with a need at that position. Especially those teams with the need and also missed out on Anthony Rendon. Assuming, of course, those same potential suitors view Josh Donaldson’s age and eventual decline as a prohibitive factor in going beyond a certain number of years and dollars to sign him.

Chicago Cubs’ third baseman Kris Bryant will have a similar line of suitors as Arenado, but the sticking point of his service time grievance against the club is a hindrance. Teams will not know how long they will have him under team control should they trade for him. That is not an issue with Arenado as his cost and contract are known, expensive though they may be.

It might be surprising that the Rockies are entertaining trade offers for Arenado less than a year after signing him to an 8-year, $260 million contract extension. However, after consecutive playoff seasons in 2017 and 2018, the club fell back to 71-91 and 35 games behind the National League West champion Los Angeles Dodgers. With the division strong and Arenado holding an opt-out after 2021, it does make sense that they would consider a retool for prospects and salary relief by trading their most marketable asset, Arenado.

Jon Morosi said the following on Twitter:

Still, it is not a slam dunk that a third baseman-hungry team should pay the exorbitant cost for Arenado, no matter how great he is. The longtime fear of players who made their name in the light air of Colorado has dissipated to a degree, but it still exists.

For Arenado, there is a drastic disparity in his home/away stats, but the away stats are still impressive with a .799 career OPS. His defense is unparalleled. He would certainly be a great player wherever he is. But is it wise to give up the assets the Rockies would need to quell the anger in the fan base for trading him? To absorb that contract? To surrender the prospects while knowing that barring a catastrophe, Arenado will opt out after two years with his new team?

Teams interested in Arenado come from coast to coast. This too is something to think about as Arenado is from Southern California and might prefer to go closer to home if he needs to accept a deal. Winning is also a priority. With the Washington Nationals, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, Dodgers and others potentially having interest, the benefit of trading for Arenado could be mitigated by the risk.

Any possible trade should be categorized as to what is best for the Rockies; what is best for the acquiring team; and what is best for Arenado.

Best for the Rockies

It needs to be a team who will take the entire contract and surrender the biggest haul including one of the following:

  • Two “can’t miss” prospects, plus two good low-level prospects
  • One established young player plus two good prospects
  • An established, cost-controlled player they can spin off, plus significant young talent.

The Dodgers check most of the boxes, but when adding in the problematic nature of trading him within the division, they would need to sweeten it even further to get the Rockies to pull the trigger. Then there’s the issue of Arenado’s no-trade clause.

The Braves are the best alternative for the Rockies. They have the prospects and they need. As cost-conscious as they are, there is a clear reticence of taking the contract, but that opt out is a shield so perhaps something could be worked out. Plus, it gets him out of the division.

Best for the acquiring team

The Nationals have the biggest need and have made an offer for Donaldson. Arenado’s contract for 2020 and 2021 is for a total of $70 million. They have the money. The opt out could be considered a safety net protecting them from the same long-term commitment they did not want to give to Rendon. If they’re willing to part with Victor Robles, then perhaps they could cobble together a package to get Arenado.

The obvious question will be why they didn’t want to pay their own star, Rendon, and then turned around to trade for Arenado. It’s a reasonable one to ask.

Best for Arenado

He’s from Newport Beach and is a Southern California kid. The Dodgers are his ideal spot. Not only would a trade to Los Angeles likely mitigate the desire to opt out, he’d accept the trade immediately. In addition, the team wins 95 games every year and has a history of renegotiating to preclude an opt out as they did with Clayton Kershaw.

He could certainly force his way to L.A. if the Rockies reach the point of no return, are dead set on trading him and he tells them straight out that he’ll refuse a deal to anywhere but there.

What it boils down to is this: the trading team must surrender a massive collection of players, take the contract, and know that they have him for 2020 and 2021 before needing to re-sign him or letting him walk.

The Rockies started this by floating the idea of trading him after one 90-loss season. Now, they’re somewhat stuck with the clock ticking, some terrible contracts for underperforming relief pitchers, and a hard division where they will likely finish in around the same place with or without Arenado regardless of him being one of the top five players in all of baseball.

Amazon Threatens to Fire Employees Over Post Article

0

Amazon is not happy with two of its employees for speaking out in a Washington Post article. Maren Costa and Jamie Kowalski were quoted in an October article claiming that the Amazon company was responsible for contributing to climate change. The two employees were reportedly called into a meeting and warned to check the company policy, and then this in person warning was followed up by an email re-stating that those in violation of the company policies were subject to termination.

“It’s our moral responsibility to speak up — regardless of Amazon’s attempt to censor us — especially when climate poses such an unprecedented threat to humanity” said Costa in an email.
