Shake Shack Returns $10 Million Stimulus Check

As a way to bolster small businesses during this pandemic, the government launched the Paycheck Protection Program. The guidelines were unclear and the project was underfunded, so many restaurants and family owned businesses remain closed. Some large corporations applied and received millions in loans, including Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Potbelly and Shake Shack.

Shake Shack announced yesterday, however, that it has returned the $10 million in loans “so that those restaurants who need it most can get it now.” They have called for better instructions on how to apply for the loans and ask that it be funded properly. Shake Shack is a big enough company to apply for outside funding, which is what they did, and they suggest that the loans program give preference to those businesses that “have limited access to outside funding.”

Marvel’s Version of Fantastic Four and X-Men Requires Deftness, Creativity

John Krasinski had a much-publicized meeting with Marvel about “future projects”, whatever they may be. Since The Office, A Quiet Place and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan actor tested for Captain America and has long been rumored a fan favorite choice to play Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) in a Marvel version of Fantastic Four with his real-life wife Emily Blunt as Sue Richards (The Invisible Woman), this started major buzz as to what’s coming. The talk with Marvel makes clear that he is eventually entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some capacity.

Apart from the occasional Easter Eggs, winks and strategic leaks designed to imply but not specify, Marvel has been relatively silent about its plans for Fantastic Four and X-Men. The deal in which Disney – which owns Marvel – acquired 20th Century Fox (dropping “Fox” from the name) gave it those long-awaited characters to do with them what fans have been waiting for: incorporate them into the MCU.

It’s too early to say if Krasinski will play Mr. Fantastic. It’s an obvious choice making it possible that Marvel will go left when everyone expects it to go right by possibly using him in another way. Still, that the studio is allowing the tension to slowly build with a similar patience it showed as it took the 12-year road from Iron Man to the collection of Marvel characters coming together in Avengers: Endgame and setting the stage for its Phase 4 largely comprised of secondary characters. The next blockbuster characters and stories for Phase 5 rely heavily on Fantastic Four and X-Men.

Both present challenges for Marvel to effectively bring them onboard.

Fantastic Four

Because the prior film versions of the Fantastic Four were either barely mediocre or outright terrible, there is less of a past to overcome than X-Men. There will be obvious expectations for Marvel’s Fantastic Four, but it would be preposterous to think that there are not already treatments and storyboards under lock and key as to the plans for it.

Marvel’s origin stories as they were updated for use in the MCU were glossed over more than fans realize. Apart from Captain America, the “how they got here” was added to the films as they moved along. Generally, the characters’ origins were not told chronologically.

For example, Spider-Man was already Spider-Man when Tony Stark dropped in with his proposition in Captain America: Civil War. Eventually, there might be more information as to how Marvel addresses the radioactive spider bite or if it does it at all. It might be that the story as to how he became Spider-Man is so well-known that it’s not even necessary unless they feel compelled to tweak it as part of a larger plan.

This is not meant to pass as advice for Marvel. Still, there are fundamentals that the new iteration will need.

With the comic origin of Fantastic Four, the crew of a spaceship – Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Benjamin Grimm – are hit with cosmic rays during a private space flight, one that was not government authorized. Upon returning, they had each developed their individual powers with Richards turning elastic; Sue the ability to become invisible; Johnny setting himself ablaze; and Grimm a powerful, craggy entity with strength rivaling that of the Hulk.

Other planets, solar systems and the outer reaches of space have been part of the MCU already, so having the group as a crew simply visiting outer space may be untenable. It might not even be necessary.

Given the prevalence of billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Richard Branson among others working toward private space exploration, that could be a window into how the Fantastic Four became the Fantastic Four. Rather than having Richards as a scientific genius doing research, he could be a multi-billionaire who is trying a similar civilian space outreach, bolstered by the sudden availability of space exploration through the ongoing events in the MCU that resulted in Endgame. A reluctant hero without the rampant ego and self-interest of the late Tony Stark, Richards could fit into the MCU in that manner.

The Fantastic Four’s hook was that despite their constant bickering, it was a family-type of affection-related banter rather than actual animosity. When they were needed, they came together and worked as a cohesive unit.

Fortunately, for Marvel in general and particularly the writers and production staff is that there’s no need to worry about the past films. 2015’s preposterous Fantastic Four with Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Miles Teller was so terrible that it’s blotted out like a traumatic experience. The two films with the pre-Captain America Chris Evans, Jessica Alba and Michael Chiklis were well-meaning and moderately entertaining, but by the time the new Fantastic Four films are announced, made and released, it will be two decades since those movies. This frees Marvel to do whatever it chooses with no attachment or explanation.

This is not true with X-Men.

X-Men

It is a hallmark of how unnecessary X-Men: Dark Phoenix was that the most memorable part was the first film appearance of Dazzler. The story was formulaic at best. The highest-paid actors Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy were going through the motions to complete their contractual requirements, seemingly happy to be done with the series. The postmortems included director Simon Kinberg saying it should have been a two-volume film. These are “Yeah, whatever,” excuses. The film was perfunctory, uninteresting, repetitive and tired. This indirectly benefits Marvel as it is the last image moviegoers have of the Fox version of X-Men.

Marvel, as it sets about remaking the X-Men does not need to be overly concerned about any characters other than Wolverine, Magneto and Professor X. The films are secondary to the portrayals and Marvel’s imprint on them. Obviously, Hugh Jackman became such a cultural icon by so completely inhabiting the duality of ferocity and gentility of Wolverine. The act is not tough to follow. It’s impossible to follow making it pointless to try and follow it by doing anything other than making its own version of the character.

Deadpool may provide a minor template as to what direction Marvel may take with the mutants, but it’s a fine line to walk in being true to the characters while creating something that differs sufficiently to those films so fans can put them aside and not compare the past to the present.

Indirectly connecting the X-Men to Fantastic Four is Nazism and its impact on the characters. For Captain America: The First Avenger, it was a necessary link because the entire origin was not only based on Steve Rogers being too meek for military service but so patriotic and determined to help that he underwent a risky serum treatment to become a super-solider to fight the Nazis in World War II. Falling into the ocean and being frozen, only thawed out seven decades later, was a critical aspect of the narrative. That is not the case with Magneto – whose power manifested when he was in a concentration camp; or the Fantastic Four’s primary antagonist Doctor Doom – who sought power by aligning himself with Hitler

In The First Avenger, the Nazis were so ancillary that by film’s end they did not even exist and were replaced by HYDRA. HYDRA’s influence extended to a subversive infiltration into SHIELD and led to the downfall of nearly the entire Nick Fury-led apparatus.

When the characters were created, World War II was relatively recent having ended within the prior two decades. The Cold War was in full swing with the red scare of communism a daily concern. These were addressed in the comics. Today, these real-world sprinklings are ill-fitting. The floated idea of Denzel Washington as Magneto was met with creased brows and tilted heads. “But wasn’t Magneto a victim of the Nazis?”

Yes. He was. But that won’t work today. Another genocide or other unspeakable tragedy can easily be tailored to fit into Magneto discovering his mutant abilities whether that is Rwanda, 9/11 or Thanos’ snap.

Since there was no intention of giving the characters to Marvel, Fox unintentionally did Marvel a favor with the early-years X-Men films by putting it in fans’ heads that Patrick Stewart was not the one-and-only Professor X; Ian McKellan was not the one-and-only Magneto; and the other characters could be replaced in a relatively seamless fashion.

The only character for whom that does not apply is the central character in the Fox series of films: Wolverine.

What Marvel could and probably should do is to bear in mind while not being a slave to Jackman’s superlative performance as the character. It cannot be the same, but it should not influence where they go in creating its own version. The easiest strategy and likely the most fan-friendly is to use the comic book introduction of Wolverine as a Canadian agent who battles the Hulk.

Returning to one of Wolverine’s origin stories as a feral beast trained, rehabilitated and weaponized in Canada could open the door to Marvel using the Canadian team Alpha Flight in some capacity.

Marvel’s use of current events was evident in the comics’ dichotomy of Professor X and Magneto’s fundamental disagreement in how to address mutant issues. Cultured and well-educated, Professor X sought peace and understanding with a liberal sensibility. Magneto, subjected to an unspeakable hell in his formative years knew what catering to the power of the state could breed, wanted to use his power to protect the “homo-superior” as he called them with a right-winger’s conservative tilt of acting rather than reacting, believing the other side has the worst possible intentions.

The battle against the “other”; authoritarianism; fear; assimilation vs. protectionism – all are fertile real-life storylines for the pending films.

***

While these are simply ideas and concepts, the foundation is that Marvel will finally get to put its mark on two missing pieces of the MCU at a time when there is a gaping hole in its fabric. Obviously, it would not have created a sense of finality with the Avengers’ original lineup, nor would it have been so vulnerable to a lull without its main marketable heroes had it not been confident it would get access to the Fantastic Four or the X-Men.

As with any creative endeavor, the story is key. Marvel has built sufficient capital to overcome the prior X-Men films, most of which ranged from good to excellent. The prior Fantastic Four films are irrelevant. Both give Marvel the room it needs to meet and surpass fan demands and expectations to fill the Hulk-sized hole left by the satisfying conclusion of Phase 3 and the groundwork of using predominately background characters in Phase 4.

The most exciting PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X video games we know about right now

The next generation of video game consoles is slowly getting closer, which brings with it the typical hype of what we could see in the coming years. As technology inevitably continues to improve, it gets more challenging to define what an actual next-gen experience is compared to what we have already seen. That being said, every company in the gaming industry is preparing itself for the next leap forward in power in your living room. There are undoubtedly numerous games we do not know about coming out during the launch window of the new consoles, but what we do know so far looks promising.

Honorable mentions

While maybe not on the scale of excitement as other games on this list, there are some upcoming games that should be mentioned. Greedfall is a PS5 exclusive made by Gearbox, developers of the Borderlands games, and seems to be melee focused. Rainbow Six: Quarantine is a team-based zombie survival game and Gods and Monsters is an open-world game set in Greece made by the Assassins Creed Odyssey team. Finally, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a story-based game following Gollum’s journey from gaining the ring of power, to losing it to Bilbo and so on.

With the honorable mentions over, here are the most exciting video games we know releasing for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (so far).

Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite is the first game in the series to release since 2015 and is (as of now) set to release alongside the Xbox Series X this holiday season. Following the continued support to make Halo: The Master Chief Collection the definitive way to enjoy the franchise (as well as the disappointment that was Halo 5: Guardians), fans are ready for a new game in the long beloved Xbox franchise.

There are still more questions than answers, but Halo Infinite has the most to gain from fans by being a great game, and the most to lose if its anywhere as disappointing as Halo 5.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was unquestionably one of the biggest surprises this console generation so when its sequel was revealed at the Game Awards 2019, many people rightly got excited. All we have seen so far of Senua’s Saga is a trailer showcasing how gorgeous the game is going to look.

Don’t expect it to release anywhere near the release of the Xbox Series X, but this is a console exclusive for the future people will want to keep their eyes on.

Starfield

Not much is known about Starfield besides that it will be the next big release from Todd Howard and the team at Bethesda, as well as the first new IP Bethesda Game Studios will release in over two decades.

Knowing the team, expect it to be like Fallout in space. An expansive RPG that will rely on world building through your dialogue and choices. We know this will be their next big release, but no idea when it will arrive yet. With Bethesda having no plans to hold a digital event going over their upcoming games this summer, it is up in the air when we could expect to learn more on Starfield.

Elder Scrolls VI

Elder Scrolls VI is the Bethesda Game Studios game on the way following Starfield. As with Starfield, there is no real idea when the game will release, but we are coming upon a decade since Skyrim’s original release. Fans of that game are eagerly awaiting more news on the sequel, but it may be multiple years before we get our hands on it.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Watch Dogs: Legion takes place in London and will allow you to recruit and play as tons of NPCs in the world. The trailer from E3 2019 shows a near-future period with drones and just a few of the possible characters you can take control of.

Following a disappointing outing from Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, Ubisoft delayed it (as well as Gods and Monsters and Rainbow Six: Quarantine) to later in 2020 and announced that all three will be coming to the PS5 and Series X.

Cyberpunk 2077

While Cyberpunk 2077 will release before the PS5 and Series X on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the game is going to get an upgraded version on the next-generation consoles. A bonus for anyone who buys the game on Xbox One, you will be able to upgrade to the Series X version for free once it is available.

Cyberpunk is made by CD Projekt Red, creators of The Witcher III. It has been in the works for a long time, slowly fine tuning the experience to be exactly as the developers want it. It is easily one of the most anticipated games of 2020.

Those are the most exciting games we know coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X as of now. Expect plenty of exciting announcements over the summer months showcasing titles both around launch of the titles and those further down the line.

Drug touted by President Trump shows no benefit to COVID-19 patients in new study

Despite President Trump’s claims that those infected with COVID-19 would have nothing to lose by trying Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), a drug used for decades to treat malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, the opposite turns out to be true in a new study.

According to a newly released French study, there is no evidence (nor statistical relevance) that HCQ actually helps patients infected with coronavirus and can actually put some patients at greater risk of respiratory failure. The study analyzed the medical records of 181 patients with COVID-19 who had developed pneumonia and required supplemental oxygen to help them breathe. Doctors administered HCQ to 84 of those patients within 48 hours of being admitted to the hospital and the other 97 did not.

The average age of the patients was 60 years old and 71% were men. Severity of illness and infection between the two groups were considered to be well balanced by medical professionals, thus ensuring the study was non-bias.

Outcome of the Study

The results of the study highlight the fact that taking HCQ for treatment of the coronavirus isn’t helpful and can actually cause side effects in patients that put them at greater risk of respiratory complications.

20.5% of patients in the HCQ group were transferred to the ICU or died within 7 days, compared with 22.1% in the no-HCQ group (16 vs 21 events). In terms of secondary outcomes, the group that was administered HCQ registered 3 deaths and the group that did not receive HCQ registered 4 deaths.

More importantly, taking HCQ to treat coronavirus and COVID-19 infections specifically showed a higher (27.7%) correlation of developing Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) than those that were not administered or were not taking the drug (24.1%). ARDS is a type of respiratory failure which involves the rapid onset of widespread inflammation in the lungs and is reported to have a mortality rate between 30-40%, though there are a variety of other health factors that can influence those numbers.

“These results do not support the use of HCQ in patients hospitalised for documented SARSCoV-2-positive hypoxic pneumonia,” the study authors wrote.

While the world awaits new information on a potential vaccine for COVID-19, what we do know is using HCQ can actually do far more harm than good if used for any type of treatment of the disease – especially in the elderly and other at-risk populations.

How Nintendo can make Animal Crossing: New Horizons so much better

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is unquestionably one of the most important video game releases of 2020, maybe even of all time given the circumstances surrounding its launch. It has been a much-needed escape for many dealing with the issues of today’s world during self-isolation and the spread of the Coronavirus.

New Horizons might very well be the best Animal Crossing game released yet, but that doesn’t mean it does not have its share of issues. It’s by no means a bad game, but the more people play, the more its shortcomings are brought to the forefront. Let’s take a look at what Nintendo could do to make the Animal Crossing: New Horizons experience better than it is currently.

Streamline an annoying interface

How to Connect With Friends in “Animal Crossing: New Horizons”

The first and most glaring annoyance with Animal Crossing is several cumbersome instances that you will deal with repeatedly on your island. Most of these situations pop up with menus and selecting certain options. For example, the entire crafting mechanic is a much-welcomed inclusion in the series, but as things are now, players can only craft one item at a time, regardless of the resources they have. Once you select what you will craft, your character goes through an unskippable animation for a few seconds, turns around and shows what they crafted, and asks if you would like to do it again. Simply putting an option in that asks the player how many of each item they want to craft instantly would make crafting much more intuitive and feel less like a waste of time.

This also is the situation when you want to play online. To either join or allow others to join your game, you have to talk to the Dodo Airlines clerk. When on someone else’s island, you press the minus button and leave wherever you are. For some reason, though, you cannot do the same thing when you want to fly somewhere else. The minus button only gives you the option to save and end your play session.

We will get more into the whole online situation in a little bit, but the menu system in Dodo Airlines is abysmal. First, the clerk asks if you want to fly or want visitors. From this point forward, you need to select every choice right, or you will need to restart the process with him. Again, it’s such a small detail, but the layout and execution of these kinds of menus will build up and drive you crazy the more you have to deal with them. The next decisions you make are not situated thoughtfully either and lead us into our next section.

Online play is not worth the headache

Share your community — Animal Crossing™: New Horizons for Nintendo ...

It is no secret that Nintendo does not know how to run a proper online service in 2020 when compared to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, and Animal Crossing is another example on a long list of games that emphasize that. For starters, if you connect to the internet in-game, you are instantly locked off from doing other things that require a connection like sending items to friends and looking up fashion creations in the Able Sisters’ store.

The biggest annoyance with online play is the transition between someone traveling to an island. While that player loads in, every other player on the island will be stuck looking at a screen with a blinking light displaying how close they are to joining the game. New Horizons supports up to eight people playing on one island at a time so that the host would be waiting through seven of these loading screens. Once anyone leaves, they are treated with a similar break from the action, only to say goodbye to the player leaving while they disconnect. These circumstances are unacceptable in an online game released during the current climate of online play. It completely takes the entire lobby away from playing and needs to be changed. But wait, there’s more. The host of whatever island everyone is playing on cannot place furniture, and no local cooperative play is available while playing online.

Better events

Bunny Day in Animal Crossing: New Horizons may have some problems ...

As of this writing, we are just coming off of the heels of the Bunny Day event, which was an awful slog of an extended event that was met with more critiques than praise. The problem with the Easter-inspired event was that instead of the resources you wanted to find on your island, you were stuck with collecting eggs that were completely useless to you if you were not interested in the egg crafting items (like I was). Future events need to avoid this style of play completely. They can look into earning resources for these event-specific items in a different way, possibly by purchasing with bells or something else. For the love of all things Nintendo, just never hold a fishing tournament again where there is a good chance you can catch something other than a fish during it.

Fix the one island per console ordeal

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Supports Local Co-op Multiplayer ...

One common complaint about Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes from the households that have only one Switch console and multiple people playing the game on that console. No matter how many different player accounts you have on your Switch, only one island will be accessible to all of those people, and it will be shared between them all. The first person that plays the game will be set up as the island representative and is the only one who can decide how the island is built up with bridges, houses, etc.

People sharing the Switch can play the game at the same time, but whoever is on first has full control of the camera, and you cannot do anything that requires an internet connection including, online play, sending gifts to friends, and looking for fashion creations. It’s one thing if people want to share an island with people they play with, but more often than not, you see people complaining about how this negatively impacts the game. There is no real reason that accounts would not be capable of hosting a unique island.

Those are the most glaring ways Nintendo can improve Animal Crossing: New Horizons. As it stands now, the game is good and released during a crucial time. That being said, if Nintendo can get on at least most of these issues (don’t ever expect them to improve any online functionality), the experience will be that much better for it. The speed with which they can put out updates while lock-downs are in place may be impacted, so who knows when they could come, but hopefully we see them sooner rather than later.

Woman Arrested In NJ for Lockdown Violation after Organizing Rally

New Jersey is still under mandatory stay at home orders with the Governor reminding residents that the state’s COVID-19 cases have not yet plateaued. Kim Pagan is one of many of these residents that are not happy with the forced isolation. She helped organize an anti-lockdown rally and, on Friday, was arrested for violating emergency orders. The protest pulled dozens of people into public spaces, with signs saying “Murphy’s Law Worse Than COVID-19,” and people honking their horns outside of the courthouse. This is just one of many protests against state lockdown laws. Michigan, Oregon and California are also experiencing many rallies and protests that violate the emergency laws.

Florida Protester Arrested Outside Governor’s Mansion with Arms Trapped in Concrete Barrel

28 year old Jordan Mazurek, a Texas native, was arrested Friday afternoon after sticking his arms in a concrete barrel outside the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee, Florida. He was there protesting the treatment of prisoners during the COVID-19 pandemic; his barrel reading “stop the massacre.” Police realized that Mazurek had a way to remove his arms from inside the PVC pipes in the barrel after they saw him reach up to adjust his mask. The barrel was rigged so as to make forcible removal difficult, so the police used a jackhammer and destroyed it. Other protesters on scene said they were concerned about the lack of care being taken to distance prisoners from each other and contain the spread of the virus. Florida’s Hillsborough County Jail released 164 low-level prisoners in an attempt to reduce the spread, with one released inmate allegedly committing murder the day after he was released.

London Man Who Hid COVID-19 Symptoms, Fearing Eviction, Died

0

Rajesh Jayaseelan, a 44 year old married father of two from India, died alone in the hospital this week from a combination of COVID-19 and starvation. He began to feel ill in March, and his symptoms prompted his landlord to evict him with “immediate notice.” He spent several days sleeping in his car and ended up in the hospital needing IV fluids. He was discharged but fell ill again, this time sequestering himself in his new apartment. He feared another eviction due to his illness. He spoke to his wife on the phone several times that week, telling her he feared to leave, and did not leave to get food. He drove himself to the hospital, fearing that calling an ambulance would cause suspicion, and died in the hospital a few days later. Jayaseelan is one of three Uber drivers to die in London in recent weeks.

18 Bodies Found in New Jersey Nursing Home After Anonymous Tip

Long term nursing facilities have been hit hard by the COVID-19 outbreak. This week, one home in New Jersey became overwhelmed by deaths and their preparation process became “backed up.” Police responded to an anonymous tip that bodies were being stored in a shed outside the facility. After a search they found 13 bodies on Sunday and 5 more on Monday. Relatives were unable to contact the facility regarding their relatives and contacted their district representative. “One of my concerns is that these facilities are not communicating in real time,” said Josh Gottheimer, “it’s completely unacceptable that they have to call me for updates.” The owners claim that they were fully staffed despite over 100 patients contracting the illness.

Laid Off IT Employees From Billboard, Hollywood Reporter Vandalize Website

0

Yesterday, Billboard’s website briefly contained an odd post. The article said, “In the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, Valence Media has decided to lay off their entire web IT staff. “Effective today. The online Billboard Charts are essentially perfect, so IT staff are no longer needed. Fat drunk and stupid is no way to go through life… #SavingABuckAtYourExpense”

The post was taken down later in the day with no rebuttal or update on the status of the IT department. Valence Media, parent company of Hollywood Reporter, has also laid off employees, giving pink slips to several senior writers and editors. While these layoffs are attributed to COVID-19, the company has been hemorrhaging money, with an estimated $10 million annual loss.
