Minecraft Dungeons review for Xbox One

Minecraft Dungeons is the first fully released game from Mojang since the original Minecraft released in 2009. It takes the series in a new direction, dungeon crawling. This genre has been popular for years, probably best recognized by people who have played the Diablo series. With the gameplay changing so much, you might be worried to see how the developers would handle such a shift in the series, but overall, Mojang have done a solid job translating Minecraft Dungeons into an experience anyone can enjoy.

A simple experience for better (and worst)

Minecraft Dungeons is Diablo at its most simple. Diehard fans of that series might look down on this game for that fact but I actually enjoy how this is an easy game to get into. Like the way Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was an easier XCOM for people to get into. This is a door that could open more people up to trying a game like Diablo 3 or Diablo 4 whenever it comes out.

Does Minecraft Dungeons Have Crossplay? - PlayStation Universe

That simplicity starts with the controls. You have A as your melee button, and your right trigger to shoot arrows. Those are your two main attacks. The other three face buttons are used for artifacts. These are items you equip to do special abilities like throw down a healing field, let off a blast around, call in a support mob, and many more. The simplicity in the controls is great except for one major oversight. Your melee and interaction button are always the same. This means if a teammate goes down and you are fighting near them, you will stop fighting and try to revive them. This was the number one issue players continue to have with the game, especially since you essentially are given 30 seconds to get them up. Even if you go to change controls, melee and interaction are stuck together and cannot be separated. Making it literally any other button would have served better. As it is now, that oversight does more harm than good in a battle.

As stated above, when a member in the party goes down, you only have 30 seconds to revive them until a creature called The Night swoops down at you and damages you until the whole team is down. This is an okay mechanic, but I would like to see Mojang put in an extra ten seconds when you do pickup an ally. As of now, the 30 seconds starts from the first member going down until everyone is dead or back up. That means if you are the last standing in a group of four, you have 30 seconds to pick up three others while every mob in the area is focused on you. Giving more slack to players that have survived would go a long ways to making it a better experience. It is not a game breaker, but it would be a nice inclusion.

Continuing with the controls, you can bring up a map overlay by pressing down on the directional pad which is nice and easy to understand. This is one of those features that will largely go untalked about, but it is really nice that Mojang worked it in here as a quality of life thing. Pressing in the right stick will let you teleport to any teammate of your choice. This is great if you get split up and can be used even if a teammate goes down, although you run the risk of landing in trouble yourself. There is only a short charge time before you quickly take off. I did run into a bug where I fell through the map and died while trying to teleport to a friend that was transitioning from a dungeon to outside so make sure they are not traveling when you do it. That’s pretty much it for the controls. Aside from the glaring reviving while fighting, they are simple to use, easy to understand, and they get the job done well.

A rewarding (enough) grind

Returning to the artifacts, these are useful trinkets that can turn the tide of battle when you are overwhelmed, but some are definitively better than others. There’s a large variety and you will continue to find new ones as you progress in level and gear score. This can also be said about the gear you find throughout the game. There are three gear slots in total. A melee weapon, armor, and projectile weapon. Each category has their commons, rares, and unique drops with unique being the highest rarity that will come equipped with a special effect. Every time you level up, you gain an enchantment point. These are spent directly on your equipment to give them nice boosts. For example, I had a glaive that would strike twice in a row, or arrows would be larger than normal and deal more damage. You are given a choice to how you want to upgrade your equipment, but that seems to be the only way of progression in the game. I do wish there was a way to upgrade gear that you enjoy, but as of now there is not. There are no adjustable stats for your character aside from damage and resistance gained from your weapons and armor. This is a dungeon crawler that a kid could play.

While a kid could wrap their head around the equipment in Minecraft Dungeons, the difficulty will give anyone a challenge. Before you select each level, the host chooses the difficulty. A recommended gear score is given and all that other standard stuff. What I liked most is that as you get better gear, the game will force you into tougher difficulties so you’re not breezing through everything. Just because the game is simple does not mean it is necessarily easy. You do have to fight your way through hordes of enemies to pass each level. I think a little kid would become frustrated playing this game alone considering you only have three lives per level before having to start the whole thing over. The uptick in difficulty is nice for an adult like me who has played Diablo 3 before, I am unsure how the casual crowd will take the game as they progress.

Minecraft Dungeons guide | Rock Paper Shotgun

We have seen Minecraft try different things in the past. Minecraft Story Mode was a series in a long line of similar Telltale games, so it didn’t feel special, but it was a good time. I think Mojang have made a good interpretation of how the game world should look and how the inhabitants react to each other. Your usual Minecraft mobs are here, Creepers, Zombies, Witches, Skeletons, etc. There is not much new outside of the boss encounters which are special situations. This is fine because Minecraft already has a roster of iconic monsters that anyone who has played will recognize and know how to fight. There will be new ones on the way, but for now, there is more than enough variety in who you fight.

Each level takes place in a different location that has the isometric view you expect in a dungeon crawler. I love the way the environment looks. Its kind of like regular Minecraft with those nice-looking mods. Shadows are given off blocks, character models look as good as Minecraft can get, and the locales are each unique from the others. It is really good-looking stuff and future DLCs should only continue this trend. Hopefully, we see more of this in the Series X upgrade of regular Minecraft.

Conclusion

Overall, Minecraft Dungeons is a great game to introduce someone to dungeon crawlers. The simple gameplay and replayability meets all expectations for what you think a game in this series should be. Anyone can play and understand it. The melee and interaction oversight is definitely the number one issue that needs to be addressed, but aside from that and adding more levels, Minecraft Dungeons does what it needs to do. It is available on all platforms and cross-play is in the works so everyone can play together. If you are an Xbox Game Pass subscriber you get access to the game for free, so be sure to download it and give it a try with friends.

Final score: 8/10

India Accuses Pakistan Embassy Officials of Spying, Expels Them

Two Pakistani nationals were detained in New Delhi yesterday. The Indian government made a statement saying that the detention was “for indulging in activities incompatible with their status as members of a diplomatic mission,” and issued an order to depart within 24 hours. The foreign ministry of Pakistan responded, saying “We condemn the detention and torture as well as threatening and pressuring of the diplomatic officials to accept false charges.” It is unclear if the allegations of torture are substantiated. The Indian envoy to Pakistan was called in and issued a demarche as well.

George Floyd’s Brother, Terrence, Asks to “Seek Justice” Peacefully

Terrence Floyd traveled to Minneapolis to visit the site of where his brother, George Floyd, was murdered by former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin. He spoke with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America and expressed that his brother would have urged people to be peaceful, because he wasn’t about spreading hate or condoning violence.

“He would motivate you to channel — if you’re angry it’s okay to be angry — but channel your anger to do something positive or make a change another way,” Terrence said. “We’ve been down this road already. He would want to seek justice the way we are, the way we’re trying to do. But channel it another way. The anger, damaging your hometown, it’s not the way he’d want.”

Earlier today an independent autopsy finds that George Floyd’s death “was homicide caused by asphyxia due to neck and back compression that led to a lack of blood flow to the brain.”

Anonymous Returns with Chilling Message to Minneapolis Police Department and Criminal Elite

The hacker-activist group, Anonymous, seems to have returned after the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers, led by ex-officer Derek Chauvin, and spent this past week providing information on Twitter covering a wide range of people and issues. That’s in addition to, allegedly, taking down the Minneapolis police department website.

Here is the video they released and the transcript of the message delivered.

Greetings citizens of the United States. This is a message from Anonymous to the Minneapolis Police Department. Police brutality and murder is a widespread problem in the United States, which has undoubtedly infected nearly every jurisdiction in the country. But the Minneapolis police department is among the worst and has a horrific track record of violence and corruption.

This week’s brutal killing of George Floyd, which has sparked protests and national outrage, is merely the tip of the iceberg in a long list of high-profile cases of wrongful death at the hands of officers in your state. In fact, in the past two decades 193 people have been killed by police in Minnesota. In recent years we have seen numerous high-profile killings in the area, including the deaths of Jamar Clark, Philando Castile, Justine Damond, Thurman Blevins and Brian Quinones. These are only the cases to catch headlines, where videos or other evidence proves that the police are lying.

Sadly, in the vast majority of police killings the only one left alive to tell the story is the officer who took the person’s life and thus the cycle is able to continue because none of these murderers ever face any justice for their actions. This travesty has gone on for far too long and now the people have had enough. In the most recent case of George Floyd, the blatant disregard for human life exhibited by the officers is undeniable. And all evidence that has been released so far has shown that Floyd was being entirely compliant with the officers, which contradict earlier claims from police that he was resisting arrest. Furthermore, our initial investigation of the offending officers has revealed a criminal pattern of violence on the job. At least two of the officers involved in Floyd’s arrest, Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao, have a history of on the job shootings and excessive force complaints.

The Star Tribune reported this week that Chauvin, the officer most directly responsible for Floyd’s death, has been involved in numerous on the job shootings where suspects were killed. There were four officers on the scene at the time of the incident. One who kept the gathering crowds away and three who were forcefully holding Floyd down. Onlookers warned the officer that he was crushing the man to death but none of the police on the scene seemed to have any concern for Floyd’s condition.

You may have fired these officers to save face, but it is obvious that this type of behavior is condoned, if not encouraged within your police department as it is in others.

Officers who kill people and commit other crimes need to be held accountable just like the rest of us. Otherwise they will believe that they have a license to do whatever they want. You will claim that this is just the work of “a few bad apples,” but what of the officers who stand by and do nothing while they commit offenses against the people they encounter and the police departments like yours who refuse to prosecute these criminals as they would one of the citizens that they are sworn to protect.

People have had enough of this corruption and violence from an organization that promises to keep them safe. After the events of the past few years, many people are now beginning to learn that you are not here to save us but rather, you are here to oppress us and carry out the will of the criminal ruling class. You are here to keep order for the people in control, not to provide safety for the people who are being controlled.

In fact, you are the very mechanism that elites use to continue their global system of oppression and the world is finally starting to wake up to this and they are becoming increasingly angry every time they see blood needlessly spilled without consequence. These officers must face criminal charges, and officer Chauvin especially should face murder charges. Unfortunately, we do not trust your corrupt organization to carry out justice, so we will be exposing your many crimes to the world.

We are Legion!

Expect us.

ISIS Claims Responsibility For Bombing of Journalists

Multiple employees of an Afghan television crew were injured when their van was bombed in Kabul, today. Two died on the scene, a journalist and the driver. ISIS took responsibility for the bombing of the Khurshid TV van saying that they were “loyal to the Afghan apostate government,” but gave no other reason for the attack. This is the second targeted attack on Khurshid TV within a year. In August of 2019 a “sticky bomb” was attached to one of their trucks, killing two passersby when it went off. There have been numerous other attacks on the press and journalists in the last few years, making Afghanistan the dealiest place for journalists.

10 most iconic video game cheats

While video game cheats are nowhere near as prevalent as they used to be, they used to bring a lot of variety to our favorite games. They could be used to flip the rules of the world on their head and give hours of entertainment or cut down on irritating features of the game. Let’s take a look back at some of the most iconic cheats found in video games.

Extra/Infinite lives (various games)

What Is the Konami Code, and How Do You Use it?

The most recognizable cheat code of all time is the Konami Code. Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start has done a variety of things in tons of games, but it is best known for giving 30 extra lives in Contra. Extra/infinite life cheat codes make games more accessible for people who might not be the most skilled players. They are perfect for older games that were unfairly tough.

Flying cars (Grand Theft Auto series)

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City PS4 rerelease removed my favorite ...

The Grand Theft Auto franchise is well known for having a variety of cheats, but one of the funner ones is activating flying cars. Starting in the PlayStation 2 days, you would activate this cheat, pick up some speed and pull back on the left stick to pull up into the air. Every vehicle became weightless to the point that if you got a tank you could aim the cannon behind you and fly as high into the air as you wanted.

More health, weapons, and more (Grand Theft Auto series)

Busted | GTA Wiki | Fandom

Grand Theft Auto is best when you go on a killing spree in its expansive world. What better way to do that than gearing yourself up with every weapon in the game? Put all the needed codes in and see how long you can survive the cops and military hunting you down.

Stage select (Sonic the Hedgehog)

Sonic The Hedgehog cheat for Mega Drive/Genesis - Level Select ...

Back in the day, no games had stage selection options. Sonic the Hedgehog changed this with use of its cheat code for a level select screen. You could immediately go to any level you wanted, instead of having to start from Green Hill Zone every time you play the game.

Big head mode (various games)

Big head mode is universally praised for how ridiculous it makes the models in-game look. Many games have used this cheat before, but it is probably most popular for its use in NBA Jam and Goldeneye 007. Often the cheat doesn’t necessarily change the gameplay, but big head mode is a classic cheat that will never be forgotten.

God mode (Doom)

Doom (32X)/Hidden content - Sega Retro

God mode gives you invulnerability to any damage the game is dulling out at you and when that game is filled with hell’s demons like Doom, that only makes the game more fun. You can play however you want when there are no consequences and can truly explore the environment for secrets. God mode is a great time no matter what game it is inserted into.

Rosebud (The Sims)

20 Things You Learned If You Wasted Half Your Childhood Playing ...

The Sims is a series about simulating life for the characters you create. That being said, getting a job and making a lot of money to build a big house could take a long time. Use the rosebud cheat to instantly give yourself tons of money. It completely bypasses the hours you would normally spend on the game to do what you want.

Exploding Lara Croft (Tomb Raider II)

Lara exploding! Tomb Raider 2 wrong cheat code. - YouTube

Following Lara Croft’s introduction in the first Tomb Raider game, there were many rumors about a cheat code to make her play the game nude. When the sequel came out, that rumor continued and this code was given to horny kids on the school ground. When they went to input the code, Lara would instantly explode into pieces. A moment those kids will never forget.

Debug mode (Sonic the Hedgehog 2)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)/Hidden content - Sonic Retro

Debug mode allows you to completely change up the levels in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. You had full access to every asset in the game and could play around with it to both create and explore to your heart’s content.

Unlock items (various games)

Resident Evil 3 - How to Easily Unlock the Infinite Rocket Launcher

Like rosebud saves you hours of time by giving you money, other games would use that chance to give you items that weren’t available via normal means or for meeting certain criteria. Resident Evil comes to mind with its infinite rocket launcher cheat. Too many games used this cheat to be mentioned here, but it was truly a fun time whenever you knew you could get a hold of an item you didn’t earn. This code was largely replaced by the introduction of micro-transactions and DLC add-ons.

YouTube Parenting Blogger Under Fire for “Re-Homing” Autistic Adopted Child

Myka Stauffer is a well known “mommy blogger” on YouTube who rose to prominence in 2017. She and her husband have 4 biological children, but prior to the birth of the most recent child they decided to adopt a child with special needs. Huxley was adopted from China in 2017. Recently fans began to notice that he was absent from Stauffer’s social media and blogs and began asking questions.

The couple then revealed that Huxley had “a lot more special needs than we were aware of,” including a brain cyst, brain tumor and a higher level of autism than they were originally told. The couple states that medical providers suggested re-homing Huxley so they did. Others are claiming the couple were told all of this information before the adoption, but decided to go on with it anyways. The video of Huxley being brought home has the highest number of views (and thus has made the family the most money) of any on Stauffer’s channel, leading some to question whether the timing of this is linked to her YouTube views.

A Gang of Monkeys Stole COVID Blood Samples in India (No, really)

An incident that reads right out of a work of fiction, a gang of monkeys in India physically assaulted a lab technician transporting COVID blood samples recently taken from patients being treated for the disease and ran off.

The attack happened Thursday at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College and Hospital in Meerut, located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

“Monkeys grabbed and fled with the blood samples of four COVID-19 patients who are undergoing treatment,” Dr. S. K. Garg, an official at the school, told Reuters. “We had to take their blood samples again.”

A video posted on Twitter shows the monkeys biting on the samples and then dropping them on the ground below. Those samples were recovered undamaged, according to Meerut medical college superintendent Dheeraj Raj.

Once the video went viral there was some panic and alarm among residents in Meerut over fears the monkeys could take the infected samples to residential areas and spread the virus. India has already seen their number of infected rise to over 167,000 and the virus kill nearly 5,000.

It’s unclear if the monkeys would be able to contract the virus if they were to of come into contact with the infected blood samples, but Garg did state that no evidence has been found thus far proving whether the monkeys could or could not contract the deadly virus. Given that the virus is believed to have originated within bats and has also been transmitted to zoo animals in some cases there is a better than likely chance monkeys could also catch the disease.

It’s also important to note that India has a rough relationship with the local monkey tribes and how aggressive they’ve become in recent years. Experts say it’s because of the destruction to their natural habitat. It also doesn’t help that with more people staying indoors due to the COVID-19 lockdown monkeys have begun to ‘retake’ city centers and other areas that used to be greatly frequented by people.

Officer Who Restrained George Floyd Detained and Charged with Murder

Derek Chauvin, the (now ex) police officer who knelt on the neck of George Floyd for over 8 minutes during an arrest, has been charged with third degree murder and manslaughter. If convicted he could face up to 25 years on the first charge and 10 years on the second. Chauvin has been detained by Minneapolis police. Governor Tim Walz made a statement today asking for order and a stop to the violence that is raging, including looting and arson. “I will not in any way not acknowledge that there is going to be that pain, but my first and foremost responsibility to the state of Minnesota is the safety and security of all citizens. We cannot have the looting and recklessness that went on.”

More Brazilian Nurses Have Died from COVID-19 Than Any Other Country

The Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, has become known worldwide for downplaying the coronavirus pandemic, refusing to close down the country or enact any restrictions. While there are arguments for and against this method of dealing with the virus, this nonchalant attitude had severe repercussions on medical workers. Nurses and doctors were not given proper personal protection equipment (PPE), even those working the epicenters of the pandemic, Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro. As a result a reported 114 doctors and at least 157 nurses have died from exposure to COVID-19. This is higher than the death rate of nurses in the USA and, per the International Council of Nurses, makes them the country with the highest reported nurse deaths.
