Ok, so here's the deal that has Baylor and their head coach Art Briles so incredibly upset.

The Big 12 unofficially has taken the stance that if both TCU and Baylor finished tied for the Big 12 Title, they would present both as champions to the College Football Playoff Committee for the sake of getting one into the College Football Playoff. However, Bob Bowlesby, Big 12 commissioner has said that if both teams miss out on the playoff, that they would recognize Baylor as the #1.

Here's the rub; The Big 12 wants to have their cake and eat it too. Unfortunately the chance to get behind one team or the other has passed. If you go to the Big 12 website, they are already selling shirts, hats and other memorabilia recognizing both as champions. Seems that naming co-champs has another trickle down effect, more revenue.

But back to the bigger picture, the one that got Baylor and Coach Briles so riled up.

One of the big selling points about the greatness of (and BY) the Big 12 is that they are the only conference that truly has a round robin. Every team in the conference plays each other. All titles will be settled on the field. Flat out the cover of the media guide indicates the league's motto as “One True Champion”.

Every week, we in the media that cover the Big 12, get an up to date “This Week In The Big 12” press release that consists of around 20 pages front and back. There's always an “About the Big 12” section that emphasizes that the Big 12 is the only conference in the country that has a “true champion” due to the fact that they are the only league that names their champion based one what happens on the field, among all teams in it.

This week when we got our update, that section was omitted.

"I wouldn't think I would have to, but apparently I do," Briles said later when asked if he felt Bowlesby needed to be told that he should be backing the Bears. "He would present to the committee us as co-champs. That was just my deal. If you're going to slogan around and say there's 'One True Champion,' then all of a sudden you're going to go out the backdoor instead of going out the front? Don't say one thing and do another”.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but for a league to sell itself on having “One True Champion” and then to act otherwise, in my opinion, is an insult not only to me, but the fans, students and the athletes, not only to Baylor, but the entire Big 12.

Greed sucks.
