Last night, starting at 7:50pm ET, in New York City we had the unveiling of the New York City Football Clubs badge, emblem, logo, call it what you will. The club, which kicks off its maiden MLS season next year, has been highly interactive with its new, but strong and growing fan base, and took to social media when choosing which design would be used.

Fans had the option of two designs and over the course of a four day period last week, over 100,000 votes were received. Last night the winner was revealed, and I must say, I really like it.

As you can see from the picture it is a nice round shape, looking a bit more like the Inter Milan design than the Manchester City one. It has the initials ‘NYC’ arranged on top of each other in the center and ‘New York City Football Club’ around the thickest outer circle.

People who have supported Manchester City for a while will remember a similar design on their shirts (look at any footage prior to 1997). Some fans of the side long for them to revert back to that design but I am quite sure that is not in the immediate future plans of the club.

Back to the New York badge design and it represents the whole of New York in one simple circular effort. The circle, of course, is in mind of the old NYC subway tokens used for travel while the words ‘New York City Football Club’ are in the Gotham font. The ‘NYC’ in the center would be on any badge voted for, and therefore any merchandise sold as it is the NYC monogram created by local designer, Rafael Esquer. Working from the Alfalfa Studio in New York they have created award winning work for a number of different clients, including those in sports, fashion, entertainment and online retail to name a few.

On the outside of the badge the very outside badge you will notice an orange circle. This orange is the exact tone of orange used in the flag of New York City and with a pentagon either side of the badge to represent the five boroughs of New York it really is a badge for New Yorkers.

Of course there need to be links to the parent club, Manchester City, and that’s where the sky and dark blues come in.

Now that the badge has been introduced and finalized we get to the serious business and that is selling merchandise. From this morning, if you go to, you can purchase caps, scarves and other apparel.

The publicity machine didn't stop at the unveiling either with todays New York Post carrying a full page advertisment, a sky blue page with the new badge front and center. This was followed by emails to the inboxes of the many people signed up to the New York sides mailing list letting everyone know they are open for business. As yet no replica shirt but I am sure when they are ready a whole wave of publicity will be whipped up on social media and we will have another ‘reveal’ ceremony like last night. I, for one, cannot wait.
