A parent, angry over dinosaurs being perpetuated as having ever existed, created a message board post on mumsnet, a popular parenting website, ranting about how concerned he/she was about dinosaurs.

The post opens with:

I'm really concerned about dinosaurs, and I think something needs to be done. The science behind them is pretty flimsy, and I for one do not want my children being taught lies. Did you know that nobody had even heard of dinosaurs before the 1800s, when they were invented by curio-hungry Victorians?

This parent also happens to be a member of the Christians Against Dinosaurs (C.A.D.) organization on Facebook, which currently has more than 5,000 public members, and fervently believes dinosaurs are nothing more than a hoax.

The page long tirade on the popular parenting site was met with mockery and jubilation (for the sheer ignorance of the post) alike, as those choosing to respond to the post did so with vast amounts of sarcasm and examples of how dinosaurs were actually described in the bible, proving their existence.

According to the website, dinosaur-like creatures are mentioned in the Bible and examples of such instances are even provided.

The Bible's best description of a dinosaur-like animal is recorded in Job chapter 40.

“Look at the behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. What strength he has in his loins, what power in the muscles of his belly! His tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are close-knit. His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like rods of iron. He ranks first among the works of God…” (Job 40:15-19).

The name “behemoth” means kingly, gigantic beasts. The term “tannin” is used to describe, and include, dragon-like animals and great sea creatures such as whales, giant squids, and marine reptiles like the plesiosaurs (which has since gone extinct).

However, biblical evidence of the existence of dinosaurs does not dissuade individuals such as this parent, or anyone else a part of the C.A.D. Facebook group.

Aside from the educational aspect, dinosaurs are a very bad example for children. At my children's school, several children were left in tears after one of their classmates (who had evidently been exposed to dinosaurs), became bestially-minded and ran around the classroom roaring and pretending to be a dinosaur. Then he bit three children on the face. One poor girl has been left with a severely dented nose and the whole class was left traumatised by this horrible display.

This person even went so far as to disown his/her own sister for giving his/her two children dinosaur toys for Christmas.

Recently my sister foolishly gave my two youngest some dinosaurs toys for Christmas. After telling her to get out of my house I burnt the dinosaurs. My children were delighted because they know that dinosaurs are evil. I am fortunate that my family has been very supportive, and has disowned my children's former aunt.

However, the real crux of the issue about dinosaurs, besides the fact that the existence of dinosaurs is a myth, is that the non-existent creatures do not represent quality values.

Nothing about dinosaurs is suitable for children, from their total lack of family values through to their non-existence from any serious scientific point of view.

Let’s go ahead and tackle the issues this poster brings up and see if we can’t do some educating, because that’s what we should do as a society when a group of people continues efforts meant to derail progress of our society, culture, and general intelligence.

  • Did you know that nobody had even heard of dinosaurs before the 1800s, when they were invented by curio-hungry Victorians?

Dinosaur fossils have been known for millennia, though they were never properly identified as such until 1676. The Chinese, whose modern word for dinosaur is kǒnglóng (恐龍, or "terrible dragon"), considered them to be dragon bones when first discovered at Wucheng in Sichuan Province sometime during the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316).

There was a time in Europe where locals considered fossilized remains of dinosaurs to be that of giants or other biblical creatures.

However, what we have come to know as dinosaurs wasn’t actually recognized as such until the late 17th century in England.

It began when the part of a bone, now known to have been the femur of a Megalosaurus, was recovered from a limestone quarry at Cornwell near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England, in 1676. The bone fragment was then sent to Robert Plot, who was a professor of chemistry at the University of Oxford at the time.

Plot was able to correctly identify the bone as the lower extremity of the femur of a very large animal, and even made the recommendation it was too large to belong to any known species. His conclusion was that the bone fragment had to be the thigh bone of a giant human, similar to those mentioned in the Bible. His description of his findings was published in his Natural History of Oxfordshire in 1677.

It took another 22 years for additional evidence of dinosaurs to be found and categorized as such, but in 1699 Edward Lhuyd, who was a close friend of Sir Isaac Newton, was responsible for the first published scientific treatment of what would become recognized as a dinosaur. Lhuyd was able to describe and even name a sauropod tooth, “Rutellum implicatum”, that had been found in Caswell, near Witney, Oxfordshire.

  • My children were delighted because they know that dinosaurs are evil.

While we can’t possibly know what the true intent and motivation of dinosaurs were, some hundreds of millions of years ago since humans did not exist in conjunction with the creatures, I’m willing to surmise that survival of each individual dinosaur and any offspring were a top priority. Caring for one’s own offspring isn’t necessarily a trait we link to being evil.

Dinosaurs also weren’t going around holding sermons to discriminate against, rape, torture and even murder those that didn’t agree with their own personal belief system. For examples of what that would look like, take a look into the history books detailing the Salem Witch Trials, The Crusades, the beliefs of the KKK during pre- and post-segregation America, and more recently the discrimination of homosexuality and equal rights.

  • Nothing about dinosaurs is suitable for children, from their total lack of family values through to their non-existence from any serious scientific point of view.

Dinosaurs have actually been proven to have lived in flocks, much like birds – an ancestor of the dinosaur, and cared a great deal for their young from birth until adulthood, much like humans do today. Dr. Robert Bakker pioneered the study and research that went into proving predatory dinosaurs actually maintained fairly rigid ‘family values’, or dino values, to ensure the survival of their offspring.

As you can see, this particular parent is largely misinformed and in all likelihood acting willfully ignorant as a means to give science and historical fact the middle finger. This person, and the group he/she belongs to, also isn’t doing the overwhelming majority of Christians any favors either – with ignorance on full display like this. It only works to lump them all together, for better or worse.
